On Thursday August 28th, 2014 Harlem Honors will celebrate and welcome Philanthropist Sylvia Chen.
Mrs. Chen is a successful businesswoman who not only continues to work tirelessly in her various entrepreneurial capacities, but also shares generously of her time and resources with the less fortunate in many communities around the world.
Sylvia always had a work ethic learned from her parents: “palms down, not palms up”, which not only keeps the principle of ''giving not receiving'' in her heart, but also underlines the efforts used to build up her thriving business of over 25 years.
Recognized for her business acumen, Sylvia was the 1st woman recipient of the 8th Annual New Canadian Entrepreneur Awards and also the Canadian recipient of the 1st Annual Outstanding Taiwanese Woman Entrepreneur Award.
Beyond her many business positions, however, the most satisfying role Sylvia has is as a philanthropist. Her legacy of giving first began in 1998 as a member of the Children’s Circle of Care (CCC), a prestigious group made up of philanthropists across North America who donate $10,000 or more annually to children’s health organizations. She has been honored with a lifetime membership in the CCC and is also on the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation’s Board of Governors.
Most recently, Sylvia has set up a $1-million donor-advised fund at the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. This is the 1st of its kind for BCCH and will help ensure that generations of children and their families can continue to benefit from superb care at BC Children’s Hospital.
The celebration will take place at The Poet’s Den Theater and Gallery located at 309 East 108th Street in Manhattan, between First and Second Avenues.
